Retirement from the workforce isn’t a smart move for many people, even if they deserve it and qualify for it. Whether you plan to retire in 30 years, or you’ve already done so, there’s one mistake you don’t want to make — according to science.

Retirement is a significant goal. You’re programmed for it. You look forward to doing whatever you want to do whenever you feel like doing it. You expect to live life on your own terms. Even young people ditching their jobs to search for happiness want to retire as soon as they can.

But it’s sometimes unwise.

Last month, my aunt joined the mass exodus of females leaving the workforce. She says if she gets out of bed, she’ll sit on her front porch all day and become an expert at doing nothing. She believes she earned that privilege.

That’s alarming.

Scientific research reveals if you’re a female and plan to disengage from difficult tasks, it’s in your best interest to rethink retirement. My aunt should change her plans or find another job.

Possibly the worst thing you can do after you retire, according to science
