I thought my job was supposed to make me happy. It failed.

Several years ago, I worked for a company that stressed me all the way out. The worst part is that I let destructive feelings about my job infect every other part of my life.

Headaches, back pain, broken relationships, whining, complaining, and tears became my constant companions.

Although I had several reasons for feeling as I did about the company, reasons also existed for me to feel differently. But I was unable to see them while working in the toxic environment.

When red flags wave, pay attention

After a lengthy job search, I heard about an opening at the headquarters of a steel manufacturing company. They needed a tech support representative. I applied for the position. To my surprise, the application included a “no-sue agreement” as a condition of employment.

Although hesitant and suspicious, I signed it.

The final interview took eight hours. I talked to six different men that day. Most of them said they’d never enjoyed an interview so much. Even so, they denied my request for a lunch break because “no one scheduled it.”
