As a Black woman with a journalism degree, I was taught to hide my face. I was also taught to use pictures of pretty White ladies, older White men, or no pictures at all if I didn’t want my writings tossed into the “African-American” category.
You may not realize how much you read that Black people wrote—on this site, in libraries, and elsewhere. For a long time, hiding our skin covering was the only way we could get our books and articles to you.
